MOLLY URAVITCH
Molly Uravitch is a ceramic and mix media artist based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is known for her highly decorated ceramic surfaces, which utilize a wide pallet of color. She works in both functional and sculptural formats and utilizes thrown and altered as well as hand built techniques.
Consistent themes in Uravitch’s work are color, pattern, texture and a sense of whimsy. Creating a tactile surface is extremely important to her. Both reductive and additive processes are utilized to create relief on her functional forms.
Geometric and organic shapes as well as creatures are depicted on the interior and exteriors of Uravitch’s ceramics forms which provide an excellent canvas to display carved patterns and shapes which express a personal narrative.
Uravitch is an avid gardener who draws influence from the natural world, studying flora and fauna which have unusual forms and surfaces. “The pattern and color combinations found on insect bodies, sea creatures, flowers and leaves can utilize some wild color harmonies. These are excellent references.”
Uravitch currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin Stout, in the School of Art & Design. Originally from the east coast Uravitch moved Minneapolis after she earned her MFA from Southern Illinois University, in Ceramics. She received her BFA in Crafts from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan.
